RECOMMENDED

Option 1: Online Submission

The fastest and most convenient method. Submit your application through the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service online portal.

1

Check Your Eligibility

Visit the NI Courts portal and confirm you're eligible for online submission. Most straightforward estates qualify.

2

Prepare Your Documents

Print and sign your completed NIPF7 form. Scan or photograph the signed form and any supporting documents (death certificate, original will).

3

Submit Online

Upload your documents through the portal and pay the court fee (£310 plus £77 personal application fee) online. You'll receive instant confirmation.

4

Send Original Documents

Post the original will and death certificate to the Probate Office as instructed by the portal. Keep copies for your records.

✓ Faster processing (typically 4-6 weeks)

✓ Instant confirmation of receipt

✓ Pay court fees online

Option 2: Postal Submission

Traditional method where you send all documents by post to the Probate Office in Belfast.

1

Print and Sign

Print your completed NIPF7 form and sign it. Most applications are supported by a Statement of Truth rather than an oath. In some unusual cases, additional evidence/affidavits may still be required.

2

Gather Supporting Documents

Collect the original will, death certificate, and any other required documents mentioned in your submission guide.

3

Include Payment

Include a cheque or postal order for £387 (£310 court fee plus £77 personal application fee) made payable to "Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service".

4

Post to Probate Office

Send everything by recorded delivery to:

Probate Office

Royal Courts of Justice

Chichester Street

Belfast

BT1 3JF

After Submission

Once the Probate Office receives your application:

  • They will review your application and supporting documents
  • If everything is in order, they will issue the Grant of Probate
  • Processing typically takes 4-8 weeks (can vary with demand)
  • If they need clarification, they'll contact you by post or email
  • Once issued, the Grant will be sent to your registered address

Keep copies of everything you submit. The Probate Office will return the original will with the Grant, but keep your own records of all other documents.
